Arrest That Man! He Hurt My Feelings!

As much as I think Adel Smith is a moron and has been hoisted upon his own petard, as it were, there should be much concern over the criminalization of offensive talk (i.e. defamation) concerning religion. As best I can tell, the driving force behind these laws that are being either debated, passed or newly enforced in much of Europe and Australia, has been Muslim complaints about negative descriptions of Islam, etc. It is therefore ironic that Smith has been convicted for violating a law that his group was firmly behind. Nevertheless, we should be thankful that the concept of free speech and First Amendment rights are part of our societal norms (although quite endangered on college campuses and among the liberal intelligentsia) otherwise you could be hauled off to the pokey for referring to New York City as "Hymietown." (Special thanks to the Rev. Jackson for that one) UPDATE: A school in Vermont is going to change its teams' name from "Crusaders" to something less offensive.
