Dilution Of The Term "Genius" (or - We're All Geniuses In Our Own Way)

Mozart was born 250 years ago. Alan Bock writes a piece about the young prodigy and begins with these words: "The closest I have ever come to a definition of genius is a creative impulse that manages to find expression, whatever the circumstances of a particular life, in works of discovery, creativity, insight or beauty that other intelligent people find important, inspiring or transcendent." This week, Entertainment Weekly's cover photo is of Kanye West with the title "Inside the Mind of Music's Brash Genius." How standards have dropped...unless, of course, you believe we'll be listening to his "music" (or that of his peers, for that matter) in the 23d century.
